Certification Courses

The YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley provides certification courses throughout the year to ensure the safety of both our members and the community.  We partner with nationally accredited organizations such as The Red Cross to ensure that our staff and community members have the latest skills needed to be ready in a critical situations.

CPR / First Aid / AED

Upon successful pon successful completion of our courses, you will earn a certification that satisfies OSHA-mandated job requirements, workplace or other regulatory requirements, and is valid for 2 years. From personalized learning to interactive scenarios to peer-to-peer learning and hands-on skill practice, our courses are developed and taught by experts, and ensure you can provide life-saving care when it's needed most. With hundreds of locations across the United States and the option to choose from online, in-person or blended learning course formats, there's a class for the way you learn best.

Lifeguard Certification

Earn your lifeguarding certification from the American Red Cross. Our courses reflect the latest techniques based on science and best practices to ensure that you are properly trained and prepared for emergencies in and around the water.

All lifeguarding participants must complete the required swimming skills prerequisite prior to taking the course. The prerequisite skills assessments include a swim-tread-swim and a timed event sequence.

Throughout the course, participants will learn and be evaluated on knowledge and skills related to lifeguarding, water rescues, extrications, CPR and AED and First Aid.

In addition, at the conclusion of the course, participants must successfully complete 3 final skills assessments:

  • Rotate in-conduct surveillance – rotate out

  • Timed Single-rescuer CPR Scenario

  • Multiple Rescuer Response Scenario

Participants are required to take one final written exam consisting of 50 questions and score a minimum of 80%.

Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding certification course will be issued one of the following certifications depending on the Lifeguarding course completed. For example, participants that successfully complete the Lifeguarding (including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, will be issued a certification valid for 2 years.

Babysitting Course

American Red Cross babysitting classes are easier than ever to learn new skills, gain valuable insights and information – and get your babysitting business started the right way.

Although every situation is unique, there are some universal babysitting skills and techniques that every babysitter should have. Our courses were designed with this principle in mind and can help you deliver the care that families need. Just a few of the things our babysitting classes cover include:

  • Basic Care for Infants and Children

  • Basic First Aid

  • Child Behavior

  • Age-Appropriate Activities

  • Emergency Protocols

  • Professionalism

  • Leadership

  • Growing Your Business

Along with our industry-leading child care and babysitter classes, we also offer First Aid and CPR/AED certification courses. Also available online and in person, these classes allow you to gain additional skills that can help save a life. Successful completion of these courses gives you a two-year certification and access to refresher materials – so you can keep your skills sharp between certifications.

Based on the annual calendar provided, the YMCA's CPR/First Aid/AED and Babysitting Courses are held at the Oneida Family YMCA. Lifeguarding Courses are provided throughout the year based on YMCA and community needs.
